Career story

As my boss and seniors are always helping and guiding me, I have developed my career significantly. After pregnancy and childbirth, I have strived in my daily work and pursued qualifications to further my career.

Estimation Department, Ogaki Office

Hikaru Honjo

Joined TSUCHIYA in 2007.

Degree: Bachelor of Engineering Architecture

Freshman (Initial 3 years)While forming the basic career experience as a site manager, I initially experienced anxieties.

From the time I joined the company, I wanted to work on-site, and I began a site supervisor career in the building department of the Nagoya branch office. Most of the projects I engaged in were new construction sites for condominiums. At the beginning, I worked as an assistant to seniors, taking pictures of structures and writing documents. Thanks to this experience, I was able to deepen my understanding of site management, such as on-site flow and construction procedures, as well as tests and inspections related to construction.

At that time, there were not many female on-site directors, and it was difficult for female engineers to be accepted and sometimes I couldn’t work positively. However, I gradually got through it and became accepted in the same way as a male site engineer or craftsmen, and I learned more about construction. This experience in the field has been useful in various situations even after I was assigned to the current estimation department.

Mid-career (From 4th to 6th year)Every day I learned that communication is necessary for Estimation.

I was transferred from the Building Department to the Estimation Department and was in charge of estimation work for exterior construction work. The job requires identifying materials needed for construction from the design drawings, specifying the quantity, and compiling costs in the estimation breakdown. At first, the estimation department had a strong image of desk work, but I noticed it was a department that required communication, just like working in the field, such as talking to outside contractors and consulting with related departments and bosses.

At the beginning of my assignment, I had a hard time due to my lack of knowledge about exterior construction. I was able to gradually accumulate knowledge and experience in estimation while actively consulting with outside contractors and the person in charge of the estimation in the civil engineering department and listening to their opinions. Even after shifting to my current structural estimation work, if there is a construction method with a new structure, I continue to work by searching for materials and listening to the opinions of those around me.

Present (From 7th year to present)Strive to keep a balance between work and childcare and work efficiently.

I am currently in charge of Structural Estimation. Estimating the amount of soil, formwork, concrete, rebar, etc., while looking at the drawings using integration software. I am entrusted with a number of properties by myself, but I have been able to work well and efficiently.

It has been three years since I returned to work after taking maternity leave and childcare leave. Even if your lifestyle changes, such as marriage, pregnancy, and child-rearing, it is the consideration of my boss and colleagues that I can do the same work as smoothly as before, and my juniors who can ask for support in the case of large properties, that enables me to work here. It is difficult to keep a balance between work and child-rearing, but I am accomplishing my daily work while trying to use my limited time efficiently, such as setting up my future work early.

FutureAiming to improve my skills, I want to focus on acquiring qualifications.

The contents of design documents are changing year by year, and the construction method is gradually adopting new methods. In line with this, we try to respond firmly by changing the method of estimating quantities and asking the contractor for detailed construction methods.

As my child grows older and I can afford it, I would like to acquire a qualification as a first-class architectural construction management engineer, and I am studying little by little from now on. I would like to do my best so that I can further improve my skills in the future while making use of the knowledge and experience I have acquired so far.

I think many people have a negative image that "there are few women in the construction industry." However, at TSUCHIYA, the number of female employees in technical positions is increasing year by year, and as I have experienced many things myself, I have felt that there are various areas in which women can play an active role. TSUCHIYA has an environment where it is easy to consult with bosses and colleagues, and in addition to maternity leave and childcare leave, there is also a childcare-related system in place.

Why don't you test your motivation and enthusiasm at TSUCHIYA?
